How Off-the-Grid Mode Works

Off-the-Grid Mode lets two phones talk directly to each other when they're close by — no internet, no mobile data, nothing in the middle.

How it works

When you start an Off-the-Grid session, the two phones build a short, private radio link directly between themselves. Your voice never leaves that link — no servers, no Wi-Fi router, no mobile network.

It does not use your internet connection. You can be in the middle of a forest, on a boat, or in an underground car park. As long as the two phones are close enough, Whispr just works.

How far does it reach?

Range depends on what is around you:

EnvironmentTypical range
Open outdoors (park, field, beach)Up to about 200 m / 650 ft
Indoors with a few wallsAbout 30–80 m / 100–260 ft
Crowded or noisy radio environmentsCloser to 30 m / 100 ft

Voice quality

Off-the-Grid Mode is tuned for clear, low-delay voice — the kind of crisp speech you want from a walkie-talkie. It is not designed for streaming music, but voices come through naturally and clearly.
